Evaluation of CD digipak & music poster.

Once we had finished filming our music video and it was going through the editing process we also had to create a CD digipak & music poster to promote and sell our product. This task was just as time consuming as the editing of the music video as it took care, concerntration and lots of creative ideas that we could sieve through to accomplish a eye catching final product.

The process of making a digipak and poster included lots of mini taks that would need to be carried out in order to help us create both of these. Firstly we set up a photo shoot in the photography studio with our main character 'Affi' so we had some plain photos to work with and edit. We took a variety of photos

Evaluation of shoot!

Evaluation of Shoot

Last friday, the 4th of november we shot our music video for our media coursework. The day before we had been into the media studio to create our set ready to film. The building of our set was reasonably simple yet it took time and care to arrange. We had stars leading up to a very royal red looking thrown. On the steps we stappled red carpet onto them to make them look more grand and also link in with the thrown. Either side of the steps we had two Ionic Columns. The reasons we used these is because it balanced the set out and also allowed us to place objects on top of them. On one of the columns we placed a stack of Flat Caps, we choose to do this because it gave the set a slight twist and also juztaposed the 'Kingly' image. Although we had a shooting schedule we didn't stick to it maybe as much as we should of. We decided to have 3 different sets, these included two in the studio and one in guildford. Because we had such a variation of all three sets and also the weather becoming a concern we couldnt follow the shooting schedule because it meant we would have to come up with more shots to film so we would have a back up if the weather stopped us from filming in Guildford. As a result we ended up filming a huge variety of creative shots in the studio and not heading to Guildford until the late afternoon.

Our first Set Design

Affi & Georgie were both asked to come to the studio for 9am ready to start shooting, but we soon realised that we only needed Affi for the morning as he was to play the main character and singer. Georgie stayed to watch so she could get prepared for the role she was playing later on in the shoot. One problem was that Affi was not as prepared as we would of hoped. The lyrics are hard to learn and are sang quickly therfore this meant Affi struggled with quite a few of the verses. We gave him many run throughs to allow him to become comfortable with the set and the camera. The last few verses Affi found particulary difficult so we had to let him take time out to read over the lyrics and go back and film it gradually. As a result of Affi not being familiar enough with the words we had to do more wider shots instead of the up closes of his face because otherwise you would of been able to see that he wasnt singing the words right.

Lighting effects

We had a variety of shots which we alternated between. These included :
  • Extreme close ups
  • Tracking shots
  • Establishing shot
  • Extreme close ups of different parts of his face
  • Shutter Shots
  • Side shots of the side of his face
  • Shaking effect shots
We had not decided before hand that we were going to use all of the above shots but on the day because we had the worry of the weather we decided to be creative and find more shots we could include that we could use as back ups.

Tricky Shots -
Above is a photograph of Hector using the dolly. The dolly helps you to film a tracking shot and keep it stready. Without the dolly all our shots wouild be fuzzy and wobbly. We had to place the tubing that the dolly ran along all around the set and make sure that there were no tangles or bumps because otherwise the dolly would not run smoothly. Whilst on the dolly you also had to make sure that you kept a steady hand and kept slowly turning the camera the way the dolly was being pushed. Overall i feel the tracking shots looked really professional, i watched them on the television screen and they all ran smoothy.

To get the shaky effect  camera shots we had to slightly shift the camera side to side when we were recording. This proved difficult at times because it was hard to shift the camera side to side quickly, therefore the shaking effect would stall and we would have to record again. We had to find the right balance between the spoeed of the shaking. After a few trials we decided that instead of having the whole shot very shaky we would alternately have the occasional shake. I feel this looked much better as you could actually make out what was being filmed but there was still a little shaking and movement to it.

As i said previously our group decided that we wanted to film with three different sets. Two were in the studio, and the other in Guildford. We wanted a variation of different sets so we could really show the contrast between both characters. We had Affi in the 'Royal' set which included the thrown and red carpet and then had Georgie in the streets of Guildford. This symbolised that 'Affi' had power over 'Georgie' and was almost looking down on her.

Apart from the king themed set we also had a set that consisted of just lights. These lights are called blinder lights. There were three rows of six blinder lights. We had rather a few so when turned on it was incredibly bright. The image we wanted to achieve was to have the lights over powering our characters so we simply could just see their silhouette and the rest would be beams of light.

The weather was going to be an issue when it came to filming in Guildford but we decided to take a risk. Luckily the weather was fine but because we left filming until the afternoon we were loosing light quickly. We chose to film along a river bank that had buildings either side. We wanted it to look secluded and barren. Originally we had only selected a few specific shots that involved 1) an establishing shot & 2) a few shots of Georgia walking towards the camera. To make use of the time we came up with a number of different shots. My favourite was the fast tracking one of Georgia, it involved one of us holding the camera and walking backwards as Georgie walked towards the camera. This did prove difficult because it was hard to keep the camera steady and at the same time see where you were walking. It got dark quickly so we only got an hour and a half to get a collection of shots that our group could bring back to the editing suite, although it was limited time i feel that the group managed to get some really creative and professional looking footage that we could potentially use in the final cut video.

To finish with i thoroughly enjoyed our media shoot day. It was tough at times because there was alot to concerntrate on and also balancing the work between each of the group members but overall it was great fun. I was very nervous about how the shoot would go before we had set up our set but once we got into the studio and started filming everything came together and it all ran smoothly.

This is soundwork nwith good use of presentations to illustrate and evaluate your work - there are evident clear accounts of your planning and research for your music video production day after half term.  I like the way in which decision making is evident along with reflection and revisions -partyicularly for teh animatic.  There are two posts that are incompete with your blog - can you complete please.

Your cast list has been agreed and you need to be working on the set design and organisation of production. You need to recognise work that other's have completed in your group and identify what you have done - do this with individual evaluation.    Please make sure that you share resources but not evaluation work - which should be an individual effort.  Well done.

Lighting Idea's.

For our set we had to consider what we wanted for our lighting. Here is a powerpoint of all the lighting we want to include to add to our set and also create the atmosphere.

Animatic storyboard - proof of editing.

As a group we edited our storyboard to create the animatic. The process involved uploading the footage and then finding each shot, putting it in order and putting the music in time with the shots. The video above is a short clip of the editing in process. It shows step by step what we did in order to create our animatic.

Animatic of storyboard. Party Animal

The video above is our storyboard edited to fit our song. Storyboarding was quite a long process because we had to make sure each shot fitted in time with the music and also be sure that the shots were not to long or to short. The drawing of the storyboarding also took time because each drawing had to be clear and represent exactly what we wanted in each shot. Once we had finished the storyboarding process we then filmed them. The media department supplied us with camera's. With this camera we filmed each individual shot for 10 seconds each. When we had finished we took the footage up to the media editing suite and loaded it all onto 'Final Cut Pro'.  The editing process then began. This consisted of placing the music and the individual shots onto the time line. The final result is shown above.  The whole process needed alot of teamwork. Overall i feel we worked really well as a group. We balanced the work load well and assigned individual tasks to different people. By assigning individual tasks to other group members it meant our work all got done at a quicker pace and also to a better quality. I found the editing of the storyboards really hard and tricky to get to grips with, but sitting there and watching how 'Final Cut pro' works helped me to learn the basics ready for editing our actual music video.

Research and evaluate the institutional context of your artist?

Our artist Affi fits into the grime genre, therefore we needed to find a record company that supports and signs grime music. Whilst researching i came across a record label called 'No hats, No hoods'. They are one of the biggest underground music rave organises as well as a promising new record label to the grime scene that has seen some sucessful music releases recently. For example - Tempa T who has been a huge influence to our group in the process of creating our artist 'Affi'. 'No hats, No hoods' is a reletively new record label and isn't yet very well known. It attracts a small audience who are specifically interested in the grime genre. Although this may seem as a disadvantage because many artists want to be well known and popular within the mainstream audiences i personally feel that our artist 'Affi' would be better off signed to a record label that concerntrate on the grime genre. Having a record label that is strictly interested in selling the grime genre to the public means that our artist is more likely to become popular because the record label will be concerntrated on selling that genre to its exsisting audience as well as others. Below is a link to the record label -    http://www.nohatsnohoods.co.uk/.

The target audience of our artist 'Affi' would be the younger generation. A teenage audience to young adults. Between the ages of 16-20. The majority of 'Grime' fans tend to be ethnic minorities and from working class families this is usually because of the roots of the music. Here are a few images of our target audience.

There are some good creative posts on the blogs which cover your initial concept well.  You do need to post the brief and what about who else you are group working with.  Slideshow is good.  Would be even better if you continue to link your ideas with real media products and link with theoretical ideas use Negus on the Music Industry and Dyer on Star Image.  Keep up with the efforts on your blog and stay creative in your presentation.

Writing up our proposal.

In the past few lessons we have have been coming up with lots of different ideas for our music video. We have done lots of  research on what we want to include in our music video. After looking into different concepts we have all chosen our favourite idea's and brought it together to outline the main concept for our video.

The artists name in our video is going to be - Affy. The reason we have chosen this is because its short and snappy and also is just a shortning of the main

Narrowing down our idea's.

Ghostpoet's video of 'cash and carry me home' inspired us to create a deep and dark video, designed to unsettle the audience. The design elements used within this video has given us an idea of the theme that will run through our video and the sort of minimalisitic prop type we will be using.
After watching this video we have come up with a list of possible props/ideas to use-:
- oil canister (set alight)
- see-through glasses
- a cardboard cutout of the innards of the body.
- large heads placed on small bodies- puppets
- clear bottles, jars, hanging up (fluorescent liquids in the bottle)

-Setting - blacked out studio space (minmal)
- using the natural light created by the flames of the oil canister
- possible spotlights focused on the props
- floorlights

Characters- Afalabei will be our main guy who will play the part as of the grime artist in question.

Research into similar artists.

Task One - The concept continued.

Type of Act-

Individual, quirky.
These are a few images of the type of look we are going for. We want our act to look more old school and retro.

The performance – We want the performance to be dark, unexpected arty and creative. We also want it to be very minimalistic and simple, the reason for this is so when we do use props and interesting camera shots it has more of an impact on the audience.

 Star Image

The star image of our artist is going to be very alternative and individual. Alternative dress is fashion that does not conform to style trends that are popular at that moment of time. Its attention grabbing and more artistic then practical. Quite often alternative dress is influenced by music or the style of a particular artist.

Audience
Our audience is mainly targeted at Teenagers, young adults and people who are interested in the genre we have chosen. Its not a mainstream audience we have chose to target our music video at instead we have decided we want it to be targeted at a more specific and niche audience.

The Concept- task one

The Concept

Task 1

Song- Mikill Pane – Party animal.

The Genre of the song and act we are doing is - Grime/ dance music. The reason we have decided to investigate The Grime/ Dance genre is because it’s a genre that is of huge interest to our age group. It is also a new genre.

Research – History of Grime/ Dance.

The grime/ dance genre was first discovered in East London in the early 2000’s.  Dizzie Rascal and Wiley were two of the first artists to bring the genre to the mainstream audience between 2003- 2004. Although it was brought to the attention of the mainstream media Grime / dance is still considered as ‘Underground Music’. Record labels are still to acknowledge the Genre and expose it to the Global market.

Lesson on music industry.

76% of the music industry is owned by 5 different music companies. The remaining 24% is owned by independent music companies.

They BIG 5 include : Sony, Universal, EMI, BMG and Warner.

Nowadays artists have music video's that go with their new releases. But what is a music video ?
Music video's are a 'Promotional Tool'. They backup the song and help to sell it. It also links the artist to the song because they feature in the music video therefore you begin to recognise them and their music more, and it tells a story or what the song is about. This is what we call SYNERGY. An example below of a music video that promotes the artist as well as film that it features in.

The film is called 'Harry Brown' and Plan B features in the film as well as his music. The music video itself is taken from the film.

FOLLOW THE LINK BELOW.

When music is produced as well as music video's they must have a target audience. For example 'Justine Bieber's' target audience is girls between the ages of 14- 17, boys between the ages of 10-14 and familes.
Your audience has to be specifically targeted for the product to sell. By targeting young teens it also ensures that the product will be enjoyed by families as well as parents because their children will be listening and watching the music.

Research into performance shooting and editing.

When filming our prelim music video we made sure that every shot we took either concerntrated on a band member or informed the audience about what was going on.

Doing particular shoots of band members allowed the audience to see who was who and also see what instrument they were playing. It also gave them screen time and showed the audience their importance and roles in the band.

Prelim Music Video - Little Birdie

Below is the final and completed Music video 'Little Birdie' that we produced as a group for our preliminary task.

Music Video Analysis

Emeli Sande is an attractive, quirky, unique and individual new artist. The music video is based around the word 'Heaven'. We see Emeli Sandedressed in black almost preachery clothes and holding her crucifix in her hand. This suggests to the audience that she is religous. Her star image in the music video i feel is that she is seen as a God, angel or someone who can provide guidance to those who need it most. Throughout the video there is alot of referance to the skies. We see many shots of different people looking into the distance or up to the skies. This suggests they are looking for guidance. The members of public that feature alot in the music video could also be looking for (Emeli Sande) who like i said in the video is the God figure.

Emeli Sande is always based somewhere high up in the video. This represents to the audience that she has something to do with the 'Heavens'. Through the duration of the whole video we see alot of referances to 'Crucifix'. This again reinforces the fact that the video has strong links with religion and guidance from above. Not only do we see people looking up into the skies and into the distance but we also see people who are in need. For example there is a shot of a women in dim light, it looks like she has just taken something and is in need of help. Overall i feel that the main message the song is trying to portray is when life takes you to great lengths to survive will you still be recognised by god or people that can support you with guidance.

Evaluation of Pop Promo Prelim.

For our pop prelim task we filmed a band from Brighton. We were put into groups of 3 - 4 and filmed a section of the song ourselves. My group got given the last section of the song which unfortunately didn't have much singing. Because there was not as much singing we decided to be clever with our shots so they were still interesting. Our first shot choice was a wide shot, the reason we choice a wide shot was because we wanted the whole band to be seen as well as the interesting set. The next few shots we did was a series of close ups on all the different band members. The reason we did a series of close ups was because we wanted all the band members to be seen as well as establishing what instrument they were playing. Because it was the last section of the song we really wanted to make all the band members and the part they played in the band made aware of for the final part of the song and video. Overall i feel that the close up shots worked really well, the reason i say this is because they were quick yet highlighted individual band members. One thing that our group could of improved on was having a definite order of the shots we wanted to do. Looking back we didn't know exactly what shots were meant to go where, so if our organisation had been better the filming process would of been faster.

Through the filming process i played a few roles with helping bringing the video together. To begin with i operated the camera which included recording and cutting the film, i also played the 'Director' which meant i had to get everyone into place and make sure everyone was ready to for another take. Lastly my main role was 'playback'. Playback was when i had to play back the music but make sure it was the right track and at the right time.

As a group we all worked well together, we agreed on everything we wanted to do and were fair with the roles within the filming process.

Overall i was really happy with how the filming went. The footage looked great once put together and i think all the groups worked incredibly well in such a short space of time to create a music video that looked professional.

Audience Feedback

Audience Feedback is vital, as it allows us to understand where we need to improve in further projects and gain a better understanding of what the public enjoy.

In order to know what the audience thought of our thriller "The Magician" i asked a range of people to give one positive and one negative comment about it!

Comments:

Positive-"I love how its set in black and white, represents the time it was set in more"
Negative-"It would of been better if you could of heard what the magician was saying".

Positive-"The creepy music throughout builds tension and makes the thriller creepier"
Negative-"The fact the girl was about to be murdered was not made clear enough"

Positive-"The eerie music makes you instantly assume something bad is going to happen"
Negative-" The blood did not look realistic"

Positive-"Loved it, would love to see what happens next ".

Positive-"The surroundings and set made it clear what period it was set in".
Negative-"I think the magicians voice should of been completely covered up, would of added more mystery".

Positive-"The blood was really shocking, did not expect it".
Negative-"The magician should of had more camera time, just to show the audience more of his creepy side".

Positive-"The credits at the beginning and throughout made the thriller look really professional".
Negative-"The creepy music should of been more gradual".

Positive-"The long tracking shot worked really well".
Negative-"A shot of the girl in the box would of added more suspense".

Positive-"The black and white effect worked really well, especially how the blood was the only colour we see".
Negative-"There should of been more screams at the end".

From these comments its clear that the Black and white effect worked really well! The music added tension and suspense but we could of faded it and made it stronger when the murder was about to be committed just in order to make the murder slightly more obvious. The blood was too red, and does not look as realistic as it could of. Mixed opinions on the magicians voice being heard, but as a group we decided that you should be able to hear his voice but not the words spoken. The reason we chose this is because we felt that otherwise it would of all been to quiet and he would of come across less creepier. Overall i am very pleased with the comments as i feel the audience have noticed and understood the mood and idea of the thriller. Obviously there are some improvements that could make it even better but now i know what to improve on in further projects.

Here is also a screen shot from YouTube showing a couple of comments :

Evaluation Task 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to your full product?

The difference in the planning and preparation of the preliminary task and our final task is massive. When it came to planning our preliminary task we didn't really plan out the props, where we were going to film or even the people we were going to use in it. On the shoot day of our preliminary task we used the studio, it didnt have a set built so we just filmed against white walls. We chose the subject of our preliminary task on the day and got given a gun to use as a prop. We didnt have anyone to act in our prelim task so we simply asked people that were free. With our final task we spent a few weeks planning where it was to be shot, the people we were going to use in it and the props we would use. Our group drew up a detailed story board including all the detail of our tracking shot and what the set would look like. Comparing both the prelim task and our final task it shows that a lot of planning and preparation is needed in order to make the final piece work. Although our preliminary task wasn't bad compared to our final piece you can really see the difference in quality not just with the set but the way we shot it.

As you can see above we have created a professional looking logo on photoshop. As you can the difference between the two is huge and the one in our actual thriller makes it look more like and actual media product.

Here we have two mid close ups. One from the Prelim and the other from our final thriller. As you can see the one from the Prelim is very bright and the lighting has not been edited to fit the atmosphere of the clip, whereas the close up from our thriller is set in black and white and is a lot darker. This is to fit with the mood and again atmosphere of it.

We have also included credits in our thriller whereas in our prelim it was simply just a poster at the beginning saying our groups name.

Here we have two shots that introduce the characters and also show us who will be involved within the scene. As you can see in the prelim the lighting again is not set up and everything is over exposed whereas in the shot from the thriller all the lighting is set deliberately to help tell the story. Around the two people in the Prelim there is alot of space around them. In our thriller all the space is filled.

Use of camera in prelim & final task & editing

For our real thriller we set up a long tracking shot through the audience. This was easier as it covered all angeles. In our Prelim task we had very basic camera shots so that when it came to editing it was much easier for us and also easier for us to learn the basics from editing it. In the Prelim we didn't add any visual effects or sound. It was just to get to grips with the very basics of editing.
When it came to editing our final piece we added a lot more sound and visual effects. With the sound we added layer upon layer. To get it sounding really professional. We also added a black and white effect to make the camera work look more professional and give a mysterious feel to it.
Because we hadn't used visual effects or sounds in the Prelim the editing became really exciting and interesting because we learnt how to build onto something that was already good and make it to a much higher standard.

Evaluation Task 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The primary target audience for our thriller would be between 18-30 year old. The reason i have chosen this age range is because our thriller would have a unique and exciting plot with bankable stars.
The secondary audience would be the older generation, the reason i say this is because our thriller is set in the 1940's-1950's! Having the thriller set in that period of time would interest older people because it would be set around the time of when they were young, when they were born or even when there parents or relatives were young. Regardless of age, the audience would have a good level of education and a developed understanding of thrillers and what to expect from them.

Personally i would say that our Thriller is targeted at a niche audience, the reason i say this is because i feel that our thriller only targets a small specific audience and would only interest a certain type of person. It targets audiences that like more complex and psychological films. Personally i feel that it would target males more because the women in the plot are mostly victims.

Here is a picture of the type of male & female that would be interested in our thiller-

Evaluation task 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product & why?

File:Fox Searchlight Pictures.PNG

The type of Media institution that may distribute our thriller i think would be Fox searlight. The reason i say this is because they have produced and distrubted a few period pieces. Our thriller is set in the 1950's.
Our thriller also has all the key ingredients that fox searchlight have in many of their films. Narrative over action, bankable stars, a possible love interest and romantic twist in the story.

A few films from Fox searchlight that are period films are:

The hand of an adult man holding the foot of a newborn child
Tree of life is a film set in the 1950's.

File:Neverletmegoposterquad.jpg

These films are period pieces but unlike our thriller they do not include any horror or thriller aspects. Making them a lot more light hearted. I think Fox searchlight would like the concept of our film because it is set in an different period of time yet includes a dangerous twist.

Evaluation Task 2

How does your product represent particular social groups?

Our Thriller targets social groups such as people interested in science fiction and fantasy Films. Our Thriller includes a Magician. This would be attractive to them because it tackles real life in magic and mysterious way.

Programmes that have similarity's to our thriller are Doctor Who and Merlin. The reason i have choosen these two are because they include magic and may interest the same audience. They all include a main Male character that has magical powers.

Because we have a Magician in our thriller it may also attract people that enjoy watching live Magicians. One Magician that uses the mind to manipulate people and create illusions is Derren Brown. The Magician in our Thriller would use mind manipulation and illusions to commit the murders.

The sort of social group that i would expect to watch my Thriller would be :

Account & evaluation of Shoot day !

The 31st of January was our shoot day. The friday before we had to set up so we were organised and ready to shoot on the day. A few little tasks had to be done, such as painting the Magician's box, setting up the stage and arranging the tables and chairs for the audience who would be part of our thriller.
The magicians box was made by George, it was simply just made out of chip wood and then as a group we painted it black. The table's and chairs were supplied by the school, and we just covered them with white table clothes and wine glasses.

As a group we decided that we wanted our thriller to be set in the 1950's. It was to have a burlesque bar type feel to it. We created this by having a large black curtain drawn around the outside of the stage, black flooring and black walls. We also had a number of props that helped to create this atmosphere:

  • Black Magicians Box
  • Wine glasses
  • Wine bottles
  • A top hat
  • Fake blood
  • Smoke machine
We wanted our set to seem very busy, because it is supposed to set in a bar/theatre so we had the tables close together to create the illusion that there was more people. Our continuous tracking shot started off in the crowd of people, occasionally getting mid shots of the backs of people. The people sat on the tables were asked to talk normally with each other and ever so often clink their glasses. We asked them to do this so we got a good idea of the sort of sounds we would need to add more of later in the editing process.

The actors and actresses were asked to dress in smart clothing, the magician was dressed in a smart black suit with a red bow tie, waist coat and top hat, his assistant was in a a gold shimmery dress and black heels. The reason we wanted the cast to be dressed smartly is because it fitted the time period we were going for.

The cast were not needed until late morning therefore it gave us time to do a few quick testing shots. We made sure that the tracking shot ran smoothly and that the set worked well. The shooting itself was quick, it went really well and all the shots we filmed were accurate and looked good.

Overall i feel that our thriller was very successful and the final outcome will be great.
